The swish-looking guy with a red cap isn’t a Canberra regular: if you haven’t seen him strolling Braddon or frequenting Mocan Greengrout there’s good reason. Michael Farrell is a Melbournian, but while the Melbourne Writers Festival roars on in the South, we have our own taste of their city: for the time being Farrell is the Creative Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Canberra, and that means something for six emerging poets in Canberra.
Next Thursday afternoon, the author of open sesame (Giramondo) which was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Award, is running a two hour intensive at the Centre. The session will work with six emerging Canberra poets, and refine the use of metaphors and emblems in their poetry. Unlike our usual workshops, this session is $50 for members and non-members alike, and participating poets receive a copy of Farrell’s book. Participants are invited to submit a poem prior to the workshop for Michael to read and provide feedback on. Places are, however, limited to six.
The Finite:
Farrell’s workshop is running from 12pm-2pm, Thursday 29th August. The aim of the workshop is to look at the metaphorical in our poems and become more aware of its use: with the object of extending it in new ways, using emblems and google. We will also discuss how the metaphors in our poems relate to the local and/or the land.
